Blog Update Monday, January 20, 2'014

I hope that you had a great weekend.

Mr. Burgess Update
Mr. Burgess is back to school – part-time.  We are so happy to have him here!  If you need to speak with him, please e-mail him to set up a time: eburgess@grcs.org.  Please keep praying for continued healing for him.

Emergency School Closings
When inclement weather makes it necessary to cancel school, announcements are made over the following radio and television stations: WOOD AM 1300, and TV Channels 8 and 13. If Rockford Public Schools are closed or on a delay, RCS is also closed or on a delay and will be listed separately. A delay will result in no before-school care, no morning kindergarten, no preschool and no Kids’ Club. If the delay happens on a Monday, Wednesday or Friday, class for afternoon kindergarten enrichment students will begin at 12 noon that day.

Ruff Readers
We em”barked” on an exciting new reading adventure last week. Elementary grade readers are partnering up with trained dogs to improve their reading skills (the students’ skills, that is). These reading sessions take place on Wednesday afternoons in the library. Pairs of students take turns reading to dogs which are trained to be attentive to their readers. What a fun way to practice reading skills! A big thank you to the volunteers and their dogs for making this exciting opportunity available to our students.

Family Time News
We had a special Family Time for MLK Day this morning - (K-8) Special Guest: Eric Taylor, GRCHS Dean of Student Life, came to talk with us today about Dr. King’s life and impact in America.  Ask your kids about it.  The K-5 students also spent the morning going to various classes and activities learning about the life and dreams of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Art Club
Elementary Art Club starts this week with Mrs. Kurncz.  The elementary section is completely full.  The 1st-4th graders will have their first meeting on Tuesday, January 21st.  The 5th-8th graders will have their first meeting This Tuesday, January 14th.  The cost is $25 per student, or $40 per Family.  Contact Mrs. Radius in the school office with questions.

6th Grade Environmental Classroom
The annual lollipop fundraiser is currently underway with the 6th graders.  If you would like to purchase a delicious lollipop for only 75 cents, please see any 6th grade Environmental Classroom student.  All proceeds from the lollipop sale will be going to the environmental trip fund.  Thank you for your support.

On Wednesday the 6th grade EC students will be going to their GGA in the afternoon looking for animal tracks.  On Friday they will be going to Frederik Meijer Gardens and helping clean the greenhouses and other areas.  They will also be doing some indoor planting getting ready for spring!!

    Play Prop Help
We are looking for some props that we need for this year’s 8th Grade Class Play on Friday, February 7.  If you might be able to let us borrow the following items for the play, please contact   Mrs. Oren at soren@grcs.org or 616-574-6430.  The items include: coffee tables, gurney, and wedding dress.   Thanks so much for your help!

Congratulations to our spellers in the School Spelling Bee this year!  We had 40 participants in grades 4-8 and they all did so well!  Our runner-up this year was Nathan Solle (7th grade).  In second place was Henry Schenkel (6th grade) and in first place was Isaac Rop (7th grade).   Isaac and Henry will be going to the next round of competition for the Regional Bee, which will be held on Tuesday, February 11, beginning at 4:30, at Central Elementary in Grand Rapids.  Well done, spellers!

    You’re Invited!
Make sure that you have the 8th Grade Class Play penciled in on your calendar for Friday, February 7! The play starts at 8:00 p.m., and this year the play will be “The Westing Game,” which is adapted from the mystery book written by Ellen Raskin. Your evening at the play will guarantee many laughs with the comical story being performed by your favorite 8th Graders.  This is a great idea for a night out!  We hope to see you there to help figure out who will win it all in the Westing Game!
