Blog Update Tuesday, Nov 5,

I hope you had a good weekend with your friends and family!

What’s in the home bulletin?
Operation Christmas Child: We are in the midst of one of our annual service projects at Rockford Christian School: "Operation Christmas Child" (OCC).  OCC is an opportunity for us to help spread the love of Christ through the gospel message and our gifts in the shoeboxes that will be packed and mailed just before Thanksgiving. Last year we collected over 180 boxes! Let's see if we can collect even more this year. The items each class is collecting is on a previous post.

2015-16 Yearbook Cover Contest
: Congratulations to Abbigail Poquette (8th grade), whose cover art was selected to be the cover for this year's Rockford Christian School yearbook, and to Olivia Tuit (7th grade), whose cover art was selected for the back cover.  We appreciate how many students took time to create covers and to use their artistic gifts to seek to represent the theme of "In the Hands of the Potter."

Live Nativity - December 10:
We will be in need of hay bales for our Live Nativity. If you have any to donate from your fall decorating or have access to hay bales, you may drop them off in the RCS bus garage area.

Family Time
Thank you to Ms. Sharda and the first graders for leading the elementary Family Time.
Mr. Bierling, Mrs. Oren’s father, related some of his archaeological finds to our theme, “God is the Potter and we are the clay”. He also talked about how we are also molded by our parents, teachers, and our friends.
Ask your student about Family Time.

Scholastic Book Fair is Coming!
Save the date: December 1-4, just in time for Christmas shopping. Remember books make great gifts! If you would like to help out at the Book Fair, please let us know. We’d love to have a few parent helpers.

You may be surprised to know that students and teachers have checked out more than 1,800 books from the RCS Library already this year! This number does not include the book bags that go home with kindergartners nearly every day. We are a reading school! Did you know that our library has more than 15,000 copies in our collection?
Another interesting note: The School Library Journal came up with a list of the “100 Best Picture Books of All Time” and our library has all but 18 of them. We think that’s pretty cool!
Here’s the link to the list if you’d like to see it: http://www.slj.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/08/SLJ_Fuse8_Top100_Picture.pdf

2nd grade for this week
Many thanks to Mrs. Nienhuis for filling in for Mrs. Burgess and Mrs. VandeZande for these past months. Friday will be her last day here in second grade. We will all miss her.

Environmental Classroom news for this week
Frederik Meijer Gardens Work Afternoon: On Wednesday, November 4, the 5th/6th grade Environmental Program students will be heading to FMG to help the outdoor horticulture staff do some fall clean-up/planting.  It’s always nice to see the behind-the-scenes work that goes into this beautiful facility.
On Friday, they will continue building their shelters at Camp Roger.

7th grade for this week
In history class, 7th graders are planning a trial based in 1505 to determine Christopher Columbus’ “guilt” in regards to crimes committed against the Taino Native Americans in the Caribbean.  The students are very excited about this experience.  The 8th graders will be playing the jury and basing their decision of Columbus’s guilt solely on the evidence displayed at trial.  The Parents are invited to view this trial to see your child in action and for the students to have a broader audience.  The trial will be held next this Friday, November 6, from 2:10-3:00, in the Worship Center.

MS news for this week
Lunch Bunch: If students have missing assignments, Lunch Bunch is a program set up to help students to get their work completed. If a student fails to complete an assignment, they are to report to the Lunch Bunch room during noon break where they have time to complete their work. This will help get assignments in to teachers as well as help eliminate missing assignments.

TRIP News
Would you like to support your school or help a family in need? If you are not yet participating in the TRIP program, you can sign-up and help a family, give to RCS, the Eagle Fund, or your church. Or if you have an older student in a Christian college, you can give your TRIP monies to them.

PE News for this week
1st - 4th are working on their underhand throw (swing, step, throw). Ask your child to tell you the three cues and teach you how to underhand throw :)

5th - 8th Fifth and sixth grade are still working on Eclipse Ball Jr. with a large ball. 7th and 8th are transitioning to Eclipse ball with racquets! So fun!

Reminder: All students must wear tennis shoes for PE. If they do not have their tennis shoes they are not able to participate as regular shoes make scuffs on the gym floor. for 5th-8th grade they will lose half their participation points for the day if they do not have their shoes.
